Contemporary War Paintings

In the First world war a trench was a soldier's refuge and home. It was also often his grave. Very few soldiers survived the treacherous conditions or the enemy shelling. The cold and damp, the filth and decay, together with enemy action ensured a certain death for most. This stark World War One trench art is intended to encapsulate those senses.
