Unusual Abstract Paintings by UK Artist Alan Brain
expressive abstract art to stir your emotions
Follow your own path and create unseen expressive paintings.
When I first started to paint I wanted like everyone else to make something recognisable in a pleasing setting such as a boat on a lake or a beautiful sunrise on a crisp morning. Over time I realised that this art was like many others- the art world is drenched with familiar paintings in particular styles - I did not want to follow that path, I wanted to make different art in my own way. It led me to paint something different, something unusual and unique - expressive abstract art.
Conform or not?
The more an artist paints the more likely it is they develop their own "signature" that can set them apart from others but it does not always happen. In my own case it took real effort to paint as I really wanted to paint. To be honest I was not sure and that self doubt together with pressure from family and friends to conform created a real challenge. It was surely worth the challenge and I worked with like minded artists and tutors. It took a while but now I am confident and the thought of painting like others is really unattractive.
Learning how to be individual
During my journey I made some wild paintings - paintings that did not fit with me at the time but these attempts were informative to me and certainly worth recording for future reference. At times these unusual art pieces would help me move along,
Examples of my own work
I have put some of them here for you to see. Please enjoy some of my art created during my journey, I hope it will be interesting to you and if you are an artist in the making I hope it helps you along your journey.

A selection from Abstract figure paintings
The flowing hats in the first three images give character and movement with plenty of colour. The next two are void of colour, it is not needed, the body language says it all. Unusual art created by abstracting the figure to create an emotion.
Conflict and War Art
I have felt the need to paint my reaction to war and in particular The Great War 1914-1918. The three unusual paintings do not show a battle scene or a naval victorary like so many paintings - these show emotion abstracted from the horrors of war. Please click Contemporary War Paintings to see them all.
Experimental Art
Here is a collection of experimental paintings - every painting should be an experiment, some do not work and those are the ones that teach; those that work can be framed. Taking a risk to explore where the painting might go leads to expressive unusual art that is surely different to the norm.
Exhibitions and Sales of Unusual Abstract Paintings
Paintings that are unlike the norm are the ones that get noticed and these paintings are no exception. For example a number of pieces have been exhibited with The Royal Watercolour Society, The American Watercolor Society and The Crypt Gallery in London.
