passion in art- look up!

Over my artistic journey I moved quite quickly into abstraction. I wanted the viewer to decide what they see rather than spell out what I think they should see. Along the way I have used surrealism, minimalism and geometric art not intentionally, it just happened as I explored ways to make my expression. So what is my intention? To express feelings - make feelings visible - I think art is a powerful way of communicating and we have yet to understand why.

And this minimal art is one of my latest pieces - another painting with feeling original..

painting with that certain feeling- two black lines

My biggest complement is to hear "I love it but I don't know why." That tells me the viewer has made an emotional connection that is their own personal interpretation.

Enjoy the art with...        that certain feeling

Self-taught artist

whose work has developed through geometric abstraction to surrealism and is now  painting minimalism. The artist is driven by the desire to get passion, a strong feeling into his art.

He uses space and symbols to express inner feelings that connect with and intrigue the viewer.

Artistic approach

Through the years of painting the artist's work has evolved and several distinct artistic approaches are evident now, such as...

surreal art  which is a fairly new experience. The combination of real and imaginary shapes with strong colours is appealing and a powerful way to create emotion in art.

Geometric art  emerged early, the artist clearly has a penchant for rectangles and other geometric shapes.

Minimalism has been a theme throughout the artist's work and predominates now. Saying more with less is a particular goal.

No artist's journey would be complete without figure work, Alan quickly abstracted the figures to portray the body language in his art.

Several powerful series have emerged each one related to the nature of the artist - such as aviation art  (Alan is a pilot) and strong reactions to war and the pollution of our planet. There are more to come and each one will be an original abstract painting

More about this contemporary abstract artist

Exhibits internationally

My art has been exhibited widely within the UK including the Royal Watercolour Society and  internationally with leading societies such as The American Watercolor Society and The Canadian Society for Painters in Watercolour.

Media Used

I use watercolour but do not consider myself a traditional watercolourist as I am not concerned about transparency. Occasionally I use acrylic with watercolour to texturise a part of the painting

Abstract Artist

I was inspired to make art with passion and to put feeling into paintings after an art tutor said to me "Don't be concerned with does it look right ask yourself does it feel right?". That set me free from realism and I soon became interested in abstraction (most every artist starts with realistic paintings and moves towards abstraction).

 Passion driven

I found that for me an abstract painting without passion or feeling is decorative and has no lasting interest. I was lucky another tutor told me to "Find my passion!" After a while I understood that he meant find and paint something you feel strongly about. I did and I have been painting my passions ever since.
