The Guild of Aviation Artists

The Guild helped me discover the magic of abstract aviation art
through unique creations that capture the essence of flying,

It’s good to be part of the Guild again.

Rejoining the Guild

I have recently rejoined the Guild of Aviation Artists. Some years ago the Guild encouraged my passion for painting aircraft, and in those days I wanted to capture everything to do with aviation. Over time, though, my artwork changed—moving from realistic representation toward abstraction. My style no longer fitted comfortably alongside many members, and I eventually left. Today, I’m pleased to say my work is more welcomed, and the Guild deserves credit for recognising the value of different approaches to aviation art.

From Accuracy to Emotion

I no longer aim for exact reproduction. Instead, I paint the feel of flying—the emotions that come with it: elation, wonder, even anxiety. My goal is to use colour, form, and imagination to re-create that experience in a way realism cannot. As a former Flying Instructor, I can still recall moments of teaching, such as demonstrating spin recovery. That rush of excitement is what I now try to capture in my
original abstract paintings.

Recognition in the Guild Exhibition

It felt particularly rewarding to have three of my paintings accepted for the
Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition. The Guild is traditionally known for accurate depictions of aircraft in historic moments—Spitfires in the Battle of Britain, for example. My
abstract aviation art
does something different. It’s not about describing events but about capturing that certain feeling of being airborne.

Each of these original abstract paintings is a reflection of my continuing search for that certain feeling — something beyond words that colour, shape and space can express. Whether calm or dynamic, each work is unique, made with care and intention, and available directly from me, the artist.

If one of these paintings speaks to you, please get in touch — I’m always happy to share more about the story or process behind my art.
