War is stark. A soldier's life can be bare, basic. Shelter can be temporary and dangerous. Trenches offered some protection but were coffins too for many. This contemporary war art endeavours to capture that almost unimaginable situation for soldiers of World War One or The Great War.
The soldiers' experience during The Great War was marked by extreme conditions and constant danger. Trenches often seen as the only available protection from enemy fire were fraught with their own hazards, including disease, vermin, and the ever-present threat of being buried alive by artillery. The relative sanctuary of a trench could readily become a coffin.
This contemporary war art captures the essence of living and fighting in a trench presenting a paradoxical image of both safety and extinction.
The muted colours and stark shapes within this contemporary war art depict the sense of bleakness stripping away any romanticism that might be associated with war. The almost black sky serves as a reminder of the darkness that enveloped the lives of those who fought, a darkness that was both literal and metaphorical.
